Amiable rogues

Cecily Cardew (Lisa Marie Schueller) and Gwendolyn Fairfax (Meghan Hanlon) are wooed by the shifty and shiftless Algernon Moncrieff (Nicholas Koesters) and John Worthing (Simon Kendall) in Porthouse Theatre's production of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest.

One of Wilde's most famous works, the play also provides many of the persecuted gay writer's most memorable bon mots.

Previewing on July 4 and opening the next night, tickets for the show range from $15 to $22. Performances are at 8 pm, Tuesday through Sunday until July 19.

Porthouse Theatre, a program of Kent State University, produces plays on the grounds of Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls. For more information, call 330-672-2497, or log onto www.porthousetheatre.com.

Sisters, my sisters

Nino (Jacob Derwig) is made pretty by his fiancée Bo (Halina Reijg) in Zus and Zo, the Oscar-nominated queer retelling of Chekhov's Three Sisters.

Nino's sisters stand to inherit a beachfront hotel in Portugal. Their brother Nino, whom they have long known to be gay, is the only thing standing in their way: If he marries Bo, he gets sole ownership of the hotel, the sisters' last, best hope for happiness.

Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, Zus and Zo will play on Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5 at 7:30 pm and 4 pm, respectively. Both screenings are at the Cleveland Cinematheque inside the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Blvd. in University Circle. For more information, call 216-421-7450 or log onto www.cia.edu/ cinematheque. -Anthony Glassman
